TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR INDIAN SILK SAREE IN TOP SHAPE

An Indian silk saree is one of the most prized pieces of clothing a woman owns. You will often see a silk saree worn during weddings, festivals, religious ceremonies and even parties. Some silk sarees are so treasured that they are passed on from mothers to daughters.

The Indian silk saree you have is likely a treasured item too. Learn how to care for it so that you can pass it on to your daughter with the following tips on how to keep your silk saree in top shape:

1. Before keeping your folded silk saree in your wardrobe, wrap it up with a cotton material and then store. This material can be a towel or even an old cotton saree.

2. If your silk saree has zari work on it, fold the saree in such a way that the zari embroidery folds inwards. This helps protect the zari’s shine.

3. Sometimes we get silk sarees as gifts which we might not wear that often. Ensure you take it out of the closet every six months and place it near sunlight for a few hours. Then refold and store it again. This helps maintain the saree’s shine and color.

4. Avoid storing your silk saree with other types of sarees like georgette, polyester and chiffon.

5. Skip hanging your silk saree on a metal hanger. The metal might rust over time, staining your expensive saree.

6. The best way to clean heavy silk and pattu sarees is via dry cleaning.

7. If you’ve got a very intricately embroidered silk saree like a Kancheevaram or Banarasi silk saree, then take the cotton material and wrap it around each saree fold. Avoid folding two silk sarees together or placing two sarees in one cotton cover.

8. Skip washing your saree in a washing machine, even if the manufacturer claims you can do so.

9. If your silk saree remains folded for too long, it can cause permanent fold marks and tears. Once in a while, open up your saree and fold it another way. This prevents permanent creasing.

10. If you need to iron your saree at home, set the iron to ‘silk’ setting and avoid pressing too hard on the material. If you’re known to iron with pressure, consider placing a cotton material on top of your silk saree while ironing. Iron gently!
